2021.09.29 04:46 hamsterchair Covid exposure in class—how are you all handling?
Today I got an email from the registrar that someone in one of my large lecture classes has Covid. The email says to keep going to class, meetings etc but I feel a little weird about it—I have no way of knowing if I was sitting close to this person/if it was a significant exposure risk. Has anyone else gotten one of these emails? Did you isolate until you got test results back or did you keep going to things? If you isolated, were other profs understanding?

2021.09.29 04:46 Robo_0 Cryptocurrency scams and how to avoid them
Everybody wants to invest in this booming market and make large profits. It has no central issuing authority, making crypto vulnerable to scams.Crypto uses a decentralised control mechanism, generally a blockchain, which publicly records transactions in digital form.
However, the crypto market continues to be an unknown territory for many and one must do a thorough research before investing in it, thereby avoiding chances of getting scammed. Lack of sufficient information, steep growth in the value of crypto and people’s eagerness to make a quick buck have attracted scammers
Malware scams and viruses
New malware and viruses have evolved and posed a bigger threat to investors while they use websites for buying cryptocurrencies. Such malware software gain access to a user’s account(s) and take away the remaining balance, leaving the investor with nothing.
Use two-factor authentication on all your currency transferring apps and keep a check on what platform you are being taken to for making the transfer. Additionally, watch out if the website is attempting to auto-download attachments. You must also update your antivirus and system firewall.
When there’s money involved, we often want to defer to someone who knows more than us. And this is where the crypto technical-support scam comes in. A scammer’s aim in this case is to get the passphrase that unlocks your cryptocurrency digital wallet. This allows them to filch that crypto by sending it to another wallet
Do not share your passphrase to anyone , also keep it stored safely offline.
We all love getting something for nothing. And that’s what makes giveaways one of the more successful methods of theft in cryptocurrency scams. Telegram and Twitter are infamous for hosting known scammers that promise crypto in “airdrops” — in essence, free coins sent to your cryptocurrency wallet.
These are currently the biggest craze in the crypto market. Artist impersonation is one of many ways of getting scammed in the NFT world. In such cases, the scammers try to quickly sell famous pieces at a very low cost, before they are reported. Brand impersonation, fake storefronts and deceitful bidding are other ways that scammers steal your money
Always ensure that the account you are buying from is verified. Never provide personal information to anyone or to sites that look even a tad fake
Altcoin pump and dump
Another famous scam in cryptocurrency that has been scaring investors is the altcoin pump and dump, which is similar to penny stocks and are usually cheap.
A crypto influencer buys large quantities of a cheap coin, and they start promoting it on their social media. Then, they would go on to ask investors to buy them, resulting in an increase in the value of the coin. Once that is done, the influencer lets go of all their coins with a massive profit.
Do not fall prey to promotional gimmicks by celebrities and invest your life savings in them. Do your own research!!!
Students and job-seekers can be roped into employment scams. They are offered bitcoin for carrying out tasks, then told they now owe their new boss money.
Criminals may also pose as recruiters, and social media is thick with complaints of thieves offering high-profile opportunities as a way to steal data
Watch out for fraudulent job opportunities. Always check if its a legit job
Crypto phishing scams
Crypto phishing scams are much the same as faked emails, SMS texts from an unknown number, or any other irritating con attempt. They are depressingly common.
Scammers often announce fake ICOs, or initial coin offerings, as a way to steal substantial funds. Don't fall for these fake email and website offers. Take your time to look over all the details.
Cryptocurrency Ponzi and pyramid schemes
Reports of people gaining great riches from cryptocurrency naturally pull other investors in.But there are opportunists out there ready to steal your crypto by pulling a classic Ponzi scam.
A Ponzi scam is where, instead of being invested in assets to generate returns, the money from new investors is used to pay earlier investors what they assume to be big returns — so enticing more backers.
In the process, the fraudsters siphon off some of the cash for themselves. Eg : Bitconnect
Avoid investment opportunities that promise returns that seem too good to be true
DeFi is short for decentralised finance. It is a platform that is now attempting to give a new take at the conventional trading methods to make it more user friendly and allow more people to take part in it. It allows investors to put their cryptocurrency into companies and earn from it in the form of interest. The virtual money gets locked with the firm and in return, heavy profits are drawn against it
.Scammers love it because they can make a DeFi platform that looks genuine but is far from it. Investors are made to lock their money through contracts. The fraudsters then steal it without giving the owner a chance to recover it.
Do not be too eager to earn interests or profits, and research well about the platform before investing your money. If the admin asks for your private keys to fix some issue, that is a red flag and your cue to know that the admin is an impersonator.

2021.09.29 04:46 Fragrant_Economy7859 Please please help
To summarise the backstory. Met this girl 4 months ago, hit it off, had a thing the last 4 months. I called it a fwb but she didn’t like that because she said FWB don’t have feelings for each other but we did. Anyways, we got really close and are each other’s best friend now. She said a few weeks back that’s she’d be afraid to make it anything serious incase it was a messy break up and we’d lose eachother forever. While drunk she tried to kiss my friend and said she had a little crush on him. She told me this week she lost her feelings, but while she was drunk she was all over me and said she was just scared of it getting serious (she was drunk so didn’t take it to serious). Anyways yesterday I told her it’d be hard to move on from the thing we had, she called me and for 20 mins was saying how much she loved me and how much I meant to her and said “you don’t understand, you’re my priority…….as a mate”. I don’t know if she still has feelings but is hiding them or if they’re really gone.

2021.09.29 04:46 octopoda_waves What's the best way of finding out about upcoming museum talks/exhibits/special events?
I went to a talk at the Brooklyn Museum last week and loved it and would like to go to more things like that. I can of course check each museum/library's websites regularly, but is there anywhere they are consolidated?
